Massage for Scoliosis: What It Can and Can’t Do

We offer quality massage services to fit the needs of all of our clients.
addressing postural challenges in Lancaster county

Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine. Many people with mild scoliosis have little or no pain, while others deal with muscle tightness, uneven shoulders or hips, and back aches. Massage is a common way people manage that discomfort, but it’s important to know what it can and can’t do.

What Massage Can’t Do

Massage will not straighten the spine or change the bony curve. Treatment of the curve itself, such as monitoring, bracing or surgery, is decided by your doctor. Be cautious of anyone who promises to “fix” scoliosis with massage alone.

What Massage Can Help With

A spinal curve changes how muscles on each side of the back work. Muscles on one side may become tight and overworked while the other side is stretched and weak. That imbalance can cause:

  • Aching in the mid or low back
  • Tight muscles between the shoulder blades
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Hip discomfort from uneven loading

Massage can help relieve that muscle tension, improve comfort and support mobility.

What to Expect in a Session

Scoliosis is one of the issues listed for Jean Kark’s orthopedic and myoskeletal sessions. Your therapist will ask about your diagnosis, any bracing or surgery history, and where you feel discomfort. Treatment is adjusted to your curve, with pillows and positioning for comfort. Pressure is tailored, and areas around any surgical hardware are handled with care.

Pairing Massage With Movement

Strength and body awareness matter for people with scoliosis. Many clients combine massage with Pilates classes, which focus on core strength, alignment and balanced movement. Read more in Combining Pilates with medical massage for lasting posture correction.

Tips for Everyday Comfort

  • Change positions often instead of sitting in one posture for hours.
  • Use supportive pillows when sleeping.
  • Follow the exercises recommended by your doctor or physical therapist.
  • Notice which activities increase pain and share them with your therapist.

When to Talk to Your Doctor

Contact your doctor if your curve seems to be changing, you have new numbness or weakness, or pain is getting worse. Teens with scoliosis should be monitored by a physician while they’re growing.
