You may have noticed “NMT” listed in our therapists’ credentials. Jean Kark is a certified Neuromuscular Therapist (NMCT), and therapists like Kim Good and Amanda Humbert use NMT in their sessions too. So what exactly is neuromuscular therapy, and how is it different from a regular massage?

What Is Neuromuscular Therapy?

Neuromuscular therapy is a specialized form of soft-tissue work that focuses on trigger points, postural imbalances and the way muscles and nerves interact. Rather than giving the whole body the same treatment, the therapist systematically examines muscles to find the tight bands and tender spots that may be causing or referring pain.

What Are Trigger Points and Referred Pain?

A trigger point is a tight, irritable spot within a muscle. Pressing on it can cause pain somewhere else, called referred pain. For example, a trigger point in the upper trapezius can send pain into the side of the head, and points in the glutes can refer pain down the leg. NMT aims to find and calm these points.

What NMT Is Commonly Used For

  • Neck and shoulder pain, and tension headaches
  • Low back and hip pain, including piriformis-related “false sciatica”
  • Jaw pain and clenching
  • Postural strain from desk work or physical jobs
  • Muscle imbalances after injury

NMT vs. Deep Tissue Massage

ApproachFirm, slow strokes over tight areasSystematic, precise pressure on specific points

In practice, therapists often blend the two. Read more in Trigger Point Therapy vs. Deep Tissue.

What Does NMT Feel Like?

Pressure on an active trigger point can feel tender or produce a familiar ache in the area where you usually feel pain. It should ease as the point releases. Your therapist will work within your comfort level and check in often. Mild soreness for a day or two afterward can be normal.
