If you’ve had back or neck pain that keeps coming back no matter how many relaxing massages you get, you may have heard of myoskeletal alignment therapy, often called MAT. It’s one of the specialized techniques Jean Kark, LMT, NMCT, MMT uses in orthopedic massage sessions at Focused Care. Here’s what it is and who it helps.
What Is Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy?
Myoskeletal alignment is a hands-on approach developed by educator Erik Dalton. It looks at how muscles, joints and posture work together. When certain muscles become tight and others become weak, they can pull the body out of balance, irritate joints and even compress nerves. MAT combines assessment with targeted soft-tissue work and gentle movement to help restore balance.
How Is It Different From Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage focuses on releasing tension in deep layers of muscle. MAT goes a step further by asking why that tension is there. It looks at posture and movement patterns, then works on the muscles that are pulling things out of alignment, often away from where you actually feel pain.

What Can MAT Help With?
Clients often book myoskeletal sessions for:
- Head and neck pain, including stiff “cricks” in the neck
- Low back pain and stiffness
- Sciatica and other nerve-related pain
- Rotator cuff and shoulder problems
- Carpal tunnel symptoms
- Postural strain and uneven hips or shoulders
Every body is different, and results vary. Your therapist will talk through realistic goals after your assessment.
What to Expect in a Session
- Assessment: Jean looks at your posture, how you move and where you’re restricted.
- Targeted work: slow, specific pressure on the muscles contributing to the problem, sometimes while you breathe or move gently.
- Re-check: range of motion is tested again so you can feel the difference.
- Homework: you may get simple stretches or posture tips to keep progress going.
Sessions are available in 60, 90 and 120-minute lengths. Longer sessions leave time for a full assessment and treatment of more than one area.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
- People with long-standing back or neck pain
- Desk workers and tradespeople with postural strain (see orthopedic massage for tradesmen)
- Athletes with recurring tightness
- Anyone who hasn’t gotten lasting relief from general massage
If you have a recent injury, severe pain or symptoms like numbness that’s getting worse, see your doctor first.
